Before the start.

Hello again! It’s almost time for another one next year. We’ll also be going on a run in 2026 — not the Highway to Hell this time, but the Scandivanian Witherrun.
We’ll start on Monday 26 January in Malmö and finish on Friday in Gothenburg.
We are making some small updates to the car, such as putting the light bar on the bumper instead of the roof, as this provides a better view in snow.
The back of the car will be reinforced for better steering and it will also look better.

We will try to keep the website more up to date than last year. This way, you can enjoy the adventures we have with us.

Sunday 25 January

We left this morning at 8 o’clock to Malmö. It was already below zero 😊, but no snow. Today will be a lot of highway km. We will travel to Puttgarden and from the with the bridge to Malmö.
Tomorrow start will be from 7 o’clock. So it will be an even earlier morning.

Yesterday, we got a new TUV certificate. 🥳 So we should be fine for the next two years. Last week we did some upgrade to the forester, new front suspension and a lift on the back.

Monday 26 January

Today at 7 o’clock in Malmö we started. It was -1° C but no snow. For the first 130 km was only highway.
When we enter the back roads the fun started. There was more snow and ice. And the scenery was beautiful.
The Carbadgerun has Daily assignments where you can get points.

Today the first assignment was find ABBA cd. We found one in a secondhand record store. A very nice lady helped us find the cd.
Second assignment of this day was, ride 100 metres on a kick-sleigh. We did find two houses where was a kick-sleigh at the door, but nobody home. And joy riding someone elses kick-sleigh is not our style.

We finished at 16:45, at the Löftberg arena Karlstad. We had a meal there watching ice Skating. Then we went to our Airbnb for the night. Did some last inspections on the car so we can have a good start tomorrow.

Tuesday 27 January

This morning we got out of bed at 7 a.m. Outside itr was only -5 degrees. 45 minutes later we arrived at the start, which was at yesterday evening’s finish place. There was already a queue waiting for the road book.
At 8 a.m. the road book was handed out. It’s always very busy and chaotic trying to get away from the start. But it went fine, not first but nicely at the front.
Today, there was a choice of three routes, and yes, we’re going for the longest one, 9 hours and 30 minutes of pure driving time.
The first 300 km we were mostly driving in convoy, a good speed but not super fast. After the first 30 minutes of driving over snow-covered roads, we stopped to put on spike tires. These provide more grip on ice. When driving in snow, good winter tires are sufficient, but here there is often ice under the snow and then spiked tires really work better.

Today we stopped a few times because an other crews came of the road and had got stuck with its tires in the snow banking and they had to be pulled out.
We also drove alone for a long time, which is wonderful because then you can drive at your own speed. Again, beautiful views, even though it’s very white. White roads, white shoulders, and white trees. and a beautifull sunset.
At 18:20 p.m., we crossed the finish line, a great time and a super nice trip today.

This is from a other runner, reendear on the road.

Wednesday 28 January

Day 3 and freezing cold! At 7 o’clock in the morning, it was -24 degrees. But last year, we installed an engine heater in the Subaru. This keeps the coolant at a temperature of around 30 degrees. This makes starting the car much easier. So the car started without any problems, and the run start was also without any problems. First on the road.
After leaving the main road, we drove in a nice group of three cars at a good pace. There was a lot of snow blowing on the road in the morning, which limited visibility if you drove too close behind an other car. During the course of the morning, the temperature continued to drop to -26 degrees.
When it’s this cold, you don’t see anyone outside. Houses are habited, but no one is outside. It gives a deserted feeling, an all white world witch seems to stand still in perfect beauty.
Today we crossed from Sweden to Norway. Just on the Norwegian side we flew our Drone. Who had also problems whit the cold and had a limited rang. Nontheless it gives a great impression of the impressive mountain scenery.

We followed the river out of the mountains. When we where at the valley we stil had to go for 2 hours on highway wich was a little bit boring. We came in pretty early at Trondheid, took a nice dinner. Perfect day!

Thuesday 29 January

Thursday already, time flies when your having fun. The same goes on a roadtrip like this. Today we drove from Trondheim to Lillehammer. As always we left with the first runners and took the longest route. In the beginning we drove with the same two crews as yesterday.

At the start the were some tramac roads wich quickly changed to snow and ice wenn the route took us up the mountains. There the temperature dropped so far that our batery froze over while driving. We noticed that several warning lights on the dashbord came on, and the heating started to fail.
Down the mountain we stopped coverup al the radiator air inlets. The car would bearly start we had only 12.1 volts in the batery. We had also a small fuel leak because of the hozes was hardend from the cold. Afther fixing the problems we went on.

Came out that today up the mountain plaines the tempreture dropped to minus 32 degress and according to the locals minus 37 at somes places. We did a few stops at Rondane national park to see the plains and endless views of frozen over lakes. Its so impressive ist hard to catch it on video or picture.
For our 4 wheel drive Subaru the roads up the plains weren’t a problem. Some 2 wheel drive cars could only get up with snow chains. In the end everyone came up and down. In Lillyhammer we did some shopping and made ourselfes a nice dinner in the B&B. To be sure we took the batery out of the car to heat in up and give it a propper charge over night.
We will see tomorrow.

Friday 30 January

The last day already, and not that cold -15😊. Before we arrive at the start the was a message for the organisation about put on snow chances before leaving the start, sloop is very slippery because of ice. Did resolute in most of the runners leaving the car at the road, that was already small. The way of things is, if it’s not involved the road of the run, don’t go down if you can expect problems going up. We went down, cam up with no problems. But then the road was blocked, packet cars one side, the other we trying to go out and others trying to go in. 🫣.
We did drive south from Lillehammer, alongs the lake for a hour. Also the only day it ❄️ snowed.
After leaving the lake we drove on a forest road full of snow. This was the last part of road with real snow to it.

Here we encountered an other Dutch organisation but with much more expensive cars. If you like to do a winter run trough winter wonderland, I think there is for every price class some nice organised to find. We can only say that you have the exceptions this, because words and pictures don’t do it justice.
When we entered Sweden again the snow slowly became less and less. So curved road, what will be lovely on the bike in the summer, but now after days of snow and ice road, it wasn’t that impressive.
We arrived in Göteborg around 4 a.m. where receive our medals as prove of finishing.
When to check-in at our Airbnb. This was our carbage run of 2026. On Saturday we will travel home, an other 1000km boring highway.

Thank you for reading our trip store.
And like said before, you have to experience it to really understand the beauty of it.
